First, we define racial and ethnic identity and stress the importance of examining these concepts from a multidimensional frame. Next, we discuss racial and ethnic identity through developmental and descriptive lenses and highlight the strengths and limitations of the models presented.
It is important to note, however, that there can be enormous diversity within any ethnic population, so any model can serve only as a guide to common patterns of ethnic identity. In her descriptive model of white ethnic identity and worldview, Katz (1989) identifies fifteen separate values and perspectives of white American cultural identity. These range from a concept of time, which is linear and guarded as a commodity, to a win-lose orientation, which is linked directly to the value of competition.
