However, with the exception of a recent survey carried out by the Equality Challenge Unit (2013), most empirical studies on international staff in UK universities, while contributing useful insights, are exploratory, based on rather small samples and somewhat limited in scope. In this chapter we report on a phenomenological study involving 40 international academics, who were interviewed with the purpose of gaining a deeper understanding of their experience of both working and living in Scotland within the first few years of accepting an appointment at a research-intensive university.

What is particularly noteworthy about this group of academics is that all but one of the colleagues from so-called ‘developing’ countries had completed either their PhD or a post-doctoral period in a ‘developed’ country (typically Germany, the United States or Australia), and the one who had not did later gain considerable work experience in the United States prior to being appointed to a Scottish university. However, many colleagues from so-called ‘developed’ European countries also had gained some postgraduate experience in the United States (completing parts of or their entire PhD, or a post-doctoral period, there).
